Finding a good serum is kinda like striking liquid gold—for your skin.
Some of you might know what a serum is, but some of you might not. So, we figured it might be a good time to talk a little bit about what they are and why we never wanna live without them in our daily skin care routine—ever. Our skin care pro Dana Murray tells us more below.
Think of a face serum as the "heavy lifter" of skin care products. Serums contain concentrated ingredients and are result-driven to target specific skin concerns. They’re also lightweight and thin in consistency, which helps them absorb easily into the skin.
Serums are layered right after cleansing and right before applying moisturizers and sunscreens.
What are the different types of serums?
There are serums designed for just about every skin concern out there. Some serums have one primary function, while others are blends of ingredients that help address several skin concerns. Here are some examples of targeted serums you might see out there:
- Exfoliating or resurfacing
Does everyone need a face serum?
As an esthetician, I've yet to meet a person that couldn't benefit from adding a serum to their skin care routine! My favorite recommendations are serums that include high levels of antioxidants and plenty of hydration. A great option is Sun Bum’s Hydrating Serum.
Regardless of skin type, we are all exposed to free radicals like the sun, pollution, smog, etc. Antioxidants help fight off these free radicals and keep skin cells healthy and youthful. Here are some of the antioxidants included in the Hydrating Serum.
- Banana contains nutrient-rich antioxidants and minerals, including Vitamin E and Potassium, which are known to help nourish and protect against harmful free radicals and help give our skin a healthy, vibrant glow.
- Brown Algae contains high levels of vitamins and sea minerals, like Vitamin A and Magnesium, that help keep our skin feeling soft and moisturized.
- Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 known for calming redness and balancing oil production, and for keeping our skin's complexion looking smooth and balanced. It also helps protect our skin from daily skin stressors like pollution and UV rays.
